THE pain he inflicts is usually the result t of his delight in telling very corny jokes. . But Gyles Brandreth has left one of his s biggest fans in real agony – his wife.

The 72-year-old broadcaster was out walking with Michele Brown when he turned to look up at the sky, tripped and stumbled into o her. She fell to the ground and he landed on n top, causing her to suffer a broken wrist.

Wit and raconteur Brandreth, known for his s many appearances on shows such as Countdown and Just A Minute, as well of his fondness for novelty sweaters, revealed on his blog

‘She’s on the mend and I’m doing the cooking’

how what was intended to be a nature ramble to stay fit and boost the spirits ended in disaster. He listed ‘a bit of a walk’ as one of his top five tips for a happy Christmas but warned readers to ‘mind how you go’.

Brandreth then described how Miss Brown, a writer to whom he has been married for 47 years, ended up in A&E at the weekend after he failed to notice a tree root in his path.

‘It’s essential to get out into to the world for a walk every day. My wife and I aim for an hour’s walk – that’s around 6,000 steps at a pleasant pace,’ he said. ‘As you walk, look up and out.

‘The great Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist and founder of analytical psychology, studied the history of his patients and found that those who looked up and out – who took an interest in nature and art and the world outside themselves – were much happier than those who looked down and in.’ But then he added: ‘That said, be careful as you go. At the weekend, on our walk, I was so busy looking up I tripped on the root of a tree and fell on top of my wife who landed flat on the pavement – and broke her wrist.’

Brandreth sent his thanks to ‘the A&E Department at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital’ who ‘ had her arm in plaster inside an hour’. He shared a photo to Twitter of Miss Brown with her arm in a ‘fun Christmas plaster’ adding: ‘She’s on the mend happily and I’m doing all the cooking. Result.’

Brandreth, who was Tory MP for Chester from 1992 to 1997, shared a message from his wife, with whom he has three children: ‘Huge thanks for all your lovely messages – really appreciated. Here I am resting my arm on a box of tissues while waiting for Gyles to arrive with the next gourmet meal!’
