Greavsie deserves more than an MBE

-

NO ONE deserves an honour more than Jimmy Greaves, who entertained us throughout his football career. He’s still England’s fourth-highest international goal scorer with 44, including six hat-tricks, and Tottenham Hotspur’s highest goal scorer with 266. He deserves an honour far more than the Prime Minister’s brother, Jo Johnson, who has been given a peerage after being an MP for only nine years. WAYNE BOOTHROYD, Orpington, Gtr London. IT’S good news that Jimmy Greaves is to be honoured. But given that he scored 44 goals for England and remains the all-time record holder for the most goals scored in the top flight with 357, isn’t a mere MBE something of an insult? David Beckham got an OBE and he was nowhere near being part of a World Cup winning squad.

I AM thankful that at long last Greavsie is being honoured and recognised for his footballing career and lifetime of good works.

A. L. WOOD, Chipping Sodbury, Glos. WHO decides who should be honoured for their life’s work? On the one hand is a footballer, whose achievements on the pitch have stood for 50 years and who has worked tirelessly to help fellow alcoholics and champion charities. He is awarded an MBE. On the other hand is a sportsman who drives the best car in F1 and lives in a tax haven. He has been honoured with a knighthood.

MICHAEL BENSON, London SE25.
