Strolling on UK street, Bin Laden aide who was freed from jail because of his obesity

- By Lizzie Deane

A RIGHT-HAND man of Osama Bin Laden has been spotted strolling around London after he was released early from prison in the US.

Adel Abdel Bary returned to Britain last month after a court found his weight and asthma put him at risk of Covid-19.

The 60-year-old, who was Bin Laden’s spokesman in Europe, was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for his role in the US Embassy bombings in East Africa in 1998 that killed 224 people.

After winning ‘compassionate’ early release on health grounds, Bary was yesterday pictured walking around north-west London unaided. The father of six was seen leaving a £1million council flat in Maida Vale, which he is believed to share with his wife Ragaa, 59, before climbing into a Mercedes. Taxpayers are footing the bill for any monitoring of Bary undertaken by the security services. He cannot be placed under tough Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures because he has already served his sentence.

Sources told The Sun that police are seeking a ‘notification order’ against Bary which would force him to disclose details of any bank accounts, mobile phones and travel plans.

His return from the US could not be blocked because he was granted asylum in Britain in the 1990s after fleeing Egypt. Former prime minister David Cameron reportedly struck a deal with Washington bring Bary to the UK upon his release to avoid a human rights breach.

While in London he was the leader of Egyptian Islamic Jihad, known as Bin Laden’s ‘media information centre’.

He was arrested in 1999 and spent 13 years in prison before being extradited to the US in 2012.
