Sorry I didn’t take Covid-19 seriously

-

THIS is frightening. Like so many others, I had played down the horror that is coronavirus. I didn’t consider it was that bad as I thought it was just the flu. I thought lockdowns were silly and that closing the schools was overkill. I was wrong. I want to say sorry to the NHS for not taking this virus seriously. I am a frequent visitor to hospital because I have a blood condition. Last week I was admitted yet again and I have never experienced a stay like it. There were sick people everywhere. I was told there were no spare beds, huge staff shortages and a constant stream of Covid patients. Wards were being run with an insufficient number of supplies and staff. I am now back home and I’d like to say sorry to every hospital doctor, nurse, carer, porter and cleaner. I didn’t realise how bad the pandemic was until I saw what was right in front of me. We all need to take coronavirus seriously and follow the rules to stop the spread of the virus and help the NHS to beat this.

MARIE CLARKE, Gloucester. ALL the people flouting the rules and spreading the virus should be made to work for a week in a hospital where the staff are on their knees, overworked and exhausted. Let them see the anguish, pain and exhaustion being suffered across the NHS. Let them know the consequences of their irresponsible decision not to wear a mask or socially distance. Let them see the ambulances queuing up outside with Covid patients, some of whom will not see their loved ones again. Make them come to their senses.

MAUREEN BROOKER, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
