No mask? Then don’t go shopping

-

SUPERMARKETS have announced they are going to enforce the wearing of face coverings by shoppers. On my last visit to Morrisons, two people who were not wearing a mask were stopped by the security guard at the door. when questioned, one couldn’t provide a medical reason to be excused from wearing a face covering, while the other produced an exemption card. Both were allowed in the shop. Clearly the rule isn’t going to work. It’s not your GP who supplies a letter describing a health problem that means you are unable to wear a mask. You can buy or download exemption cards without providing any proof you have a medical condition, so how can they be accepted as valid? It’s a shambles. Do people believe if they have an exemption, they are immune from catching the virus? Those with health issues should not even consider going into a busy supermarket.

DON OLIVeR, Bradford. SHOPS should enforce the compulsory mask rule not only for customers, but also for staff. I have seen unmasked sales assistants stocking shelves, handling food and working in close contact with customers and staff.

I’Ve received an email from Simon Roberts, Sainsbury’s chief executive, telling me I should wear a face mask or visor when shopping at the supermarket. However, I thought the rule is that a face visor or shield may be worn in addition to a face covering, not instead of one, because they do not adequately cover the nose and mouth.

Surely stating otherwise is misleading at best and a danger at worst? ReG BOuCHeR, Royal Leamington Spa, Warks. IT wOULD be a good idea for the word ‘correctly’ to be added to the ‘masks must be worn’ signs. STePHeN PeRKINS, Grimsby, Lincs.
