New year, new savings – help spread the Christmas cost this January

Households spent more time at home than ever before in 2020. With the festive season having ended, and as we enter the coldest months of the year, energy bills could be set to surge. That’s why now is a great time to review your current energy deal.

Not only is January the coldest month of the year – it can also be one of the most expensive, with the cost of keeping your home warm biting into your finances just as much as the December bills around the Christmas period.

Take control of your bills in 2021

While there are some people who compare gas and electricity prices in order to get the best deal each year, there are still more than 11 million households who are on expensive standard tariffs.

Standard tariffs are typically the most expensive tariffs and can cost hundreds of pounds more than the cheapest deals available on the market. Standard variable tariffs are not fixed, meaning they offer no peace of mind and could increase. While they could get cheaper, they are more likely to become significantly more expensive.

Are other households switching to a better deal?

The energy switching figures are released by Energy UK each month, and before Covid-19, the numbers were consistently increasing year on year.

With the obvious obstruction the coronavirus has caused many industries, energy switching still holds strong. During the first 11 months of 2020, 5.5 million energy customers switched their supplier, and with December’s numbers still to be counted, figures could very well breach the 6 million mark.

The typical trend is that year on year more people are engaging with the energy market and are looking to cut back on unnecessary costs. To give you an example, 2019’s overall switching number beat the year before by a massive 9%, with the 2018 record of 5.8 million switched being trumped by 2019’s 6.4 million.

This has been helped by it now being easier than ever before to find your best deal and switch to it.
