- By Gregory Kirby

The reigning Miss england decided to hang up her crown and return to work as a doctor during the first lockdown.

And Dr Bhasha Mukherjee, 25, has now received her first coronavirus vaccine so that she can continue saving lives.

She returned to the UK in April after volunteering in India to answer the Government’s call for retired and junior doctors to help during the pandemic.

And Dr Mukherjee – who won the last Miss england competition in 2019 – has since been treating Covid patients at Pilgrim hospital in Lincolnshire and Royal Derby hospital.

She was delighted to receive the Pfizer vaccine this week. Dr Mukherjee, from Derby, asked the nurse who administered her jab if she could take a photo as she ‘ wanted to cherish the moment’. The beauty queen – a junior doctor specialising in respiratory medicine – said: ‘I’m thankful as being Bame (black, Asian and minority ethnic), I’m in a high-risk group. It didn’t hurt and after a few hours, I even did a Zoom home workout – press-ups and all – to celebrate.’

Dr Mukherjee, who was born in India, became the longest-serving

Miss england after Covid scuppered the 2020 finals. She said: ‘There’s no better time for me to be Miss england than while helping england at this time of need.’

The UK’s oldest living person received her Covid jab aged 112. Sarah Lilian Priest and other residents at York house care home, Dorset, received their first jab of the Oxford vaccine on Tuesday.
