THE wife of the police officer charged with murdering Sarah Everard returned to their family home yesterday.

Elena Couzens, 39, collected two bags of belongings and a book about Albert Einstein from the £ 200,000 semi- detached house in Deal, Kent.

The Ukrainian-born mother- oftwo looked calm as she left the house wearing blue trousers, a black coat and patterned scarf.

Police watched on as she made the visit. She was not wearing a wedding ring.

It is the first time Mrs Couzens, a lab technician, has been seen since PC Wayne Couzens, 48, was arrested for kidnap and murder.

It came as an inquest heard yesterday that the body of 33-year-old Miss Everard has been released to her family for her funeral.

Her parents and brother and sister listened as Kent and Medway Coroners’ Court heard that inquiries into the cause of death are ongoing.

Coroner Patricia Harding opened and adjourned the inquest in half an hour as she said: ‘It only remains for me to say to family members who are listening to these proceedings how very sorry I am for your loss.’

She said ‘the current situation is that the pathologist has not given a medical cause of death’. The court was told Miss Everard was identified by a forensic dentist after her remains were found in woodland in Kent on March 10.

Miss Everard, a marketing executive, was last seen in Clapham, south London, on March 3. The hearing was adjourned pending the outcome of the criminal investigation. Couzens is due to stand trial in October.
