F THE fifth Mughal emperor of India commissions the Red Fort in Delhi. Its design is credited to the architect also responsible for the Taj Mahal.

G AFTER Edward I conquers Wales, a series of fortifications including Caernarfon Castle are built to defend against a rebellion.

H WORK begins to carve the heads of four former U.S. Presidents into the granite face of Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.
