Like to freeze beside seaside?

As temperatures stay below zero, we’re set for a chilly few weeks

- By Chris Brooke

When taking a trip to the British seaside, you expect to bring a beach blanket – but not to find a carpet of snow.

The icy conditions yesterday felt more like winter than the early days of spring.

Snow combined with winds whipping up waves produced dramatic scenes on beaches in norfolk. And forecasters expected temperatures to drop even further last night, possibly reaching -6C (21F) in rural areas and even -10C (14F) in the Scottish highlands.

Any showers yesterday were largely of the white variety as the early April cold snap continued. Many parts of the country saw sporadic snow, sleet or hail on another cold and blustery day.

In Tregaron, Wales, the flurries caused treacherous driving conditions.

In Sheffield and on the Seaburn promenade in Sunderland, walkers found themselves caught in a snowstorm.

Less chilly conditions are expected across Britain today and tomorrow before colder weather and the risk of more snow showers going into the weekend. With pubs and restaurants opening outdoors on Monday, anyone planning al fresco dining is advised to wrap up warm as conditions will be no better than average next week.

Met Office spokesman Marco Petagna said: ‘For the next two or three weeks there’s no sign of any really warm weather.

‘It’s likely to be fairly unsettled and temperatures will be around average for the time of year.’

Yesterday the mercury plunged to -4.2C in eskdalemuir, Scotland, as everywhere saw blustery conditions, although there was sunshine in many areas.
