Talking of money, Jose walks away with £16m as he’s sacked yet again
WITH numerous domestic and European honours to his name, Jose Mourinho justified his self-manufactured ‘Special One’ moniker for most of his time in England.
But yesterday was a professional lowpoint for the 58-year-old Portuguese manager as he was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur – just six days before the side plays Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final.
Nevertheless, Mourinho, who was paid up to £15million a year, is expected to receive a payoff of around £16million because he had two years left on his contract.
He has been in management for more than two decades, which includes two successful stints at Chelsea and two years at Manchester United.
The decorated manager, who was both lauded and criticised for his brand of defensive football, also spent time at Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Porto, where his remarkable Champions League win in 2004 caught the eye of many clubs around Europe. During his time at Manchester United between 2016 and 2018, he famously lived at the Lowry hotel in Salford, while his family – wife Matilde Faria and two children Matilde and Jose Mario Jr – stayed at the family home in London.
Mourinho was well known for his blunt interviews and spats with managers. Throughout all the controversy, he still managed to pick up three Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies, an FA Cup and four EFL Cups, as well as a litany of domestic trophies in Spain, Italy and
Portugal.Tottenham is the only club where he did not win a trophy. His dismissal means he will have made a staggering £77.5million by being sacked during his managerial career, including just over £60million from his sackings in England alone.
The north London club have denied the timing of his sacking is in any way connected to the club’s participation in the European Super League announcement.
