Time for a Blair-cut!

Ex-PM causes sensation with flowing lockdown mane… so who does he remind you of?

- By James Tozer

THE reopening of hairdressers earlier this month left most of us relieved that our wild and tangled locks could finally be tamed by a professional’s shears.

But it seems that a certain former prime minister is so proud of his luxuriant silvery mane that he has allowed it to sprawl almost to his shoulders.

Unfortunately for Tony Blair, wags across Britain were quick to conjure up comparisons – not all of which were entirely complimentary.

Some said he now resembled nightclub boss Peter Stringfellow, others suggested original Doctor Who William Hartnell, tycoon Sir Richard Branson, or even Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown from the Back To The Future films.

One thing was certain, however – the sight of Mr Blair with his flowing mullet of grey hair in a television interview yesterday left all who saw it utterly transfixed. While Mr

Blair’s role as head of his eponymous Institute for Global Change may leave little time for a haircut, social media became obsessed with why he was seemingly the last person in the country still sporting lockdown hair.

Referring to Lloyd’s mad scientist from Back To The Future, one Twitchanged,’ ter user quipped: ‘I see Tony Blair has come back from the future to see Marty McFly to say something needs to be done about the kids.’

Some believed he had morphed into WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange or actor Richard E Grant.

Others offered an even more disturbing comparison. ‘I understand this last year and lockdown has been difficult and many of us have

wrote Glyn Shemwell. ‘But Tony Blair changing into David Icke must surely be the strangest change of all!’

An ageing rock star on the comeback trail was another recurring theme online.

Those who managed to pay attention to what Mr Blair said in his interview with ITV News heard him admit that ‘weaknesses’ in the New Labour devolution project meant it had failed to kill off the Scottish independence movement.

‘Where I think we were wrong was in believing that devolution would end the argument of independence – it hasn’t ended it,’ he said.

Mr Blair admitted his government should have done more to ‘emphasise the enormous things that the different countries in the United Kingdom have in common’.

But he insisted that ‘the union would already be in tatters’ had Labour not held devolution referendums in Scotland and Wales in 1997 – and was confident that the UK would still exist in 20 years’ time.
