My HusBAnd Jim has looked after me so well during our lockdown and splendid isolation. each evening he makes me a delicious, soothing drink of hot milk and honey. Very occasionally i ask for half an Oxo cube in hot water, for a change. The other evening Jim excelled himself, but had something of a ‘senior moment’. yes, i had the hot milk and honey, but also the Oxo cube — in the same mug! yikes! Please don’t try this at home.

THe article about the fake Rolex brought back memories of my fake Rolex watch. in the 1990s, on holiday in estepona, southern spain, a beach seller approached me on numerous occasions trying to sell me a watch with his wonderful banter. On the final day i gave in. After the usual banter i started to haggle a price. At half his first price, i agreed to buy, but said ‘it’s not even showing the correct time’ to which he instantly replied ‘Perhaps not in spain, but it is in senegal where it was made’. A year later i took it to a watch repairer for a new battery. When he handed it back to me his comment was ‘There you are, sir, that’s doubled the value of your watch’. Back then i used to give presentations in schools and colleges on various aspects of higher education. One evening i was giving a talk to sixth formers and parents at a school in Grimsby. As was my usual practice, i took off my ‘Rolex’ and placed it at the side of the projector so i could easily keep an eye on the time and not go over the allotted 45 minutes. Only when i went to bed that night did i realised i’d left my ‘Rolex’ at the school. The next morning, my secretary came into my office to say the head teacher had just called to say he’d placed my ‘Rolex’ in the school safe overnight and arranged for it to be couriered to me by a special secure delivery service! sadly it stopped working many years ago but it provided great memories of that holiday and for some years later, all for a few hundred pesetas.
