SLAVERY TALE The Undergroun­d Railroad, Amazon Prime

BARRY JENKINS, the Oscarwinni­ng writer-director of Moonlight, brings great skill to this portrait of escape from the brutality of slavery. The sound of the lash is rarely far away in part one, but this is far from a one-note drama. Later episodes show us very different sides of life in early 1800s U.S., and there is an element of fantasy as the railroad here is a real subterrane­an train system — in reality, it was a network of people.

U.S. ACTION S.W.A.T., 9pm, Pick

A HOSTAGE situation leads to bigger and more personal problems for Hondo (Shemar Moore) in the season one finale to this macho drama. Hondo needs everyone on their A-game — especially as he’s got a beef with his dad, too — but colleague Street is distracted by his manipulati­ve ex-con mum.

THIS is a portrait of the unsung British singer-songwriter, who is variously described here as the ‘archetypal hippy’ and a ‘musical badger’, He talks unassuming­ly about his time with Paul Weller (who calls him ‘cool’), his surprising stint with Oasis and more.

GRIPPING DRAMA Happy Valley, 9pm, Drama

SKY’S Mare Of Easttown has been compared to Sally Wainwright’s brilliant police drama, which begins a repeat from the start tonight. Sarah Lancashire stars as police sergeant Catherine Cawood, whose personal and profession­al lives become uncomforta­bly intertwine­d.

A LOT of money has been spent on the look of this new, eight-part drama from the writer of Fortitude, which opens in Rome after the assassinat­ion of Julius Caesar. Belligeren­t men threaten civil war, but could the cool young head of Livia Drusilla (Kasia Smutniak, pictured) — a real historical figure — do better?
