Will the Tories recover from by-election defeat?

-

THE result of the North Shropshire by-election should not cause too much concern to the Tories. There is no prospect of the Lib Dems forming the Opposition or doing serious damage to the Conservatives. Yes, the Downing Street partygoers have shot themselves in the foot, but that damage can be repaired. The Greens are irrelevant and the Labour Party has an ineffective leader and few real policies. If the Government gets a grip, it will weather the storm.

A. B. MEDLEY, Wakefield, W. Yorks. NORTH Shropshire is on loan to the Lib Dems and will return to the Tories at the General Election.

DAVID FLEMING, Downham Market, Norfolk.

THE Labour share of the North Shropshire vote fell from 22 per cent to less than 10 per cent at a time when the Government is in disarray and unpopular. So who should be learning lessons?

GRAHAM E. KIRK, Northampton. AFTER losing a 23,000 majority in a constituency that has been Tory for nearly 200 years, what does Boris expect to happen to the Red Wall?

CHRIS SHARP, Leeds.

THE Lib Dems won votes simply because they are the Not-theConservative-or-Labour party.

KEVIN WHEELAN, Hinchley Wood, Surrey. THE clear winner of the by-election was voter apathy. It does raise the question about what the electorate is supposed to do when no party is deserving of their vote. Will the political vacuum be filled by a woke, virtue-signalling, wannabee celebrity?

CHRIS TAYLOR, Yateley, Hants. THE knives are out. North Shropshire and one third of Tory MPs have spoken, so Boris needs to listen. No more lies, sleaze, going back on election promises or bumbling. Conservative voters expect him to get on with the job.

ROB PAGE, Northampton. RESULTS at by-elections, especially losses for the governing party, are rarely replicated at the next General Election. North Shropshire is not a watershed moment, but it is a wake-up call for the Tories.

ADEYEMI BANJO, London SE15.
