Derby willing to let stars go as financial woes worsen
DERBY CountY’s players have been told to speak to the administrators if they want to leave this month, with hopes fading of a prompt takeover and cash desperately needed to survive the season. Sportsmail also understands that Mike Ashley is frustrated with administrators Quantuma and could withdraw his interest if issues are not sorted. Ashley is not alone in being irritated by the firm — they have infuriated other clubs by ignoring calls and rejecting offers for players. the squad were addressed by boss Wayne Rooney and the administrators at the training ground yesterday and it was relayed then that offers would be considered. the EFL have asked the club to provide proof of having the funds to complete this campaign and player sales are seen as the quickest way to raise cash. there is concern that wages could go unpaid this month. Rooney wanted to keep the squad together beyond January, as their form has given rise to hope of beating relegation despite their 21-point deduction. But players such as Louie sibley and Lee Buchanan, both 20, will almost certainly be the subject of offers. It was revealed yesterday that EFL restrictions will block Rooney from signing players or renewing deals, meaning Phil Jagielka’s short-term deal has been cancelled — to Rooney’s fury. Quantuma have put off naming a preferred bidder since last year. A consortium including former Derby chairman Andy Appleby has made an offer but sources say Ashley is Derby’s best hope. However, he is yet to make an offer and will not until compensation claims from Wycombe and Middlesbrough are resolved. the claims total £45m and £6m. Quantuma released a statement last night calling on the EFL to step in and help settle the disputes. Sportsmail reported last month that the club was in danger of liquidation unless a deal could be reached with HMRC over the £29m owed, which remains to be solved.
