SOME GOALS ARE BIGGER THAN OTHERS...

- By ADAM SHERGOLD

CARDIFF won 3-1 at WIGAN but the result may not stand after it was discovered that one of the goals was too big. cardiff coaching staff complained before kick-off that one of the crossbars was two inches higher than the permitted 8ft.

Referee James Bell said it would take two hours to investigate the problem and both teams decided to continue with the match. the rules of the game state that if a crossbar becomes displaced or broken, play must be stopped until it is replaced or fixed — if that is not possible, the game should be abandoned. the EFL are set to write to home club Wigan demanding answers. Predictably, one of cardiff’s goals, scored by Ryan Wintle in the 91st minute, went in off the dodgy crossbar.

‘You do the maths. If he’d had that shot at the other end it would have bounced off the bar,’ said Wigan boss Leam Richardson. SHEFFIELD UNITED were unable to capitalise on NORWICH’S defeat as they lost 3-1 at STOKE — with Phil Jagielka, 40, (right) among the scorers. ‘anybody playing at that age is incredible,’ said Stoke manager alex Neil. ‘he’s a year younger than me and I’m looking and thinking I couldn’t last 10 minutes, never mind back-to-back 90 minutes.’

BURNLEY moved within two points of the top of the table with a 1-0 win at rock bottom COVENTRY.

Nathan tella settled the contest with a shot off the far post just before half-time.

SWANSEA made it three wins in a week as they beat SUNDERLAND 2-1 to stay in the top six.

Goals by Ollie cooper and harry Darling put them in control by half-time before Jack clarke pulled one back.

BLACKPOOL fans chanted, ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’ at Slaven Bilic as the WATFORD manager lost his third match in the job. two Jerry Yates goals in the final 10 minutes consigned the hornets to a 3-1 loss. ‘We got what we deserved,’ admitted Bilic. ‘We were simply not good enough. they wanted it more.’ Embattled Steve Bruce vowed to fight on after WEST BROM fans jeered his substitutions and chanted ‘Bruce out’ during a goalless draw with LUTON.

‘I’m never going to walk because that means quitting and I’m never going to quit,’ said Bruce. ‘how would that look? BLACKBURN inflicted a heavy 3-0 defeat on ROTHERHAM in Matt taylor’s first match in charge of the Millers. Ben Brereton-Diaz netted twice before Sammie Szmodics rounded off the win. auston trusty scored two as BIRMINGHAM beat BRISTOL CITY 3-0, with Dion Sanderson getting the other.
