Baby, you can’t drive your car... now eco-zealots block Abbey Road crossing
ECO-ACTIVISTS have sparked another day of traffic chaos by blocking the famous Abbey Road crossing and bringing drivers to a standstill.
Just Stop Oil protesters posed on the crossing in north-west London yesterday afternoon, re-enacting the cover of The Beatles’ iconic 1969 album Abbey Road.
The four activists then unfurled ‘Just Stop Oil’ banners before sitting down and gluing themselves to the tarmac, causing frustrated drivers to mount the pavement as they tried to get round.
The road was closed for more than an hour as four police vans and dozens of officers tried to remove the protesters. Four people were arrested on suspicion of wilful obstruction of the highway.
Yesterday’s protests marked the 23rd day of action by the group, which is demanding the Government halt all new oil and gas licences.
It came as eco-activists in Germany hurled mashed potato at a multi-million-pound
painting by Claude Monet – nine days after protesters in London threw tomato soup over Vincent
Van Gogh’s painting Sunflowers. Activists from the group Last Generation – which campaigns against the use of fossil fuels – entered the Barberini museum in Potsdam, hurled food at the painting and glued themselves to the wall.
The artwork, which is one of Monet’s famous Haystacks paintings, sold at auction for $110million (£96million) in 2019. Protester Mirjam Herrmann, 25, said: ‘We are in a climate catastrophe and all you’re afraid of is tomato soup or mashed potato on a painting.’ Why is Getty oil heiress bankrolling
