Singing blob eats the cast

- Compiled by Charles Legge

QUESTION Does anyone recall a spoof horror film about a singing alien that wanted to eat people?

This describes Leslie Nielsen’s sci-fi horror spoof The Creature Wasn’t Nice (1981), also called spaceship and Naked space. When the spaceship Vertigo stops to explore a previously unknown planet, the crew, including Captain Jamieson (Nielsen) and Dr stark (Patrick Macnee), find a blob of protoplasm and decide to return it to Earth for analysis.

Once on board, the life-form grows into a red, slimy, one- eyed alien which communicates by means of a Vegas lounge act and begins to gobble up the crew. The film’s most memorable scene is the alien crooning David spear’s song i Want To Eat Your Face:

‘I want to eat your face,

‘It could just be so yummy,

‘I’d like to have your face in my tummy.’

Paul Williams, Cardiff.

QUESTION Does using warm water ‘open your pores’ to improve the closeness of a shave?

IT IS a myth that pores open and close. hot water can aid a shave by softening the hair itself. Pores are tiny openings around hair follicles and sweat glands that help gases and liquids move through the surface of your skin. They don’t have muscles, so they can’t open or close.

shaving guides do recommend washing well with warm water and soap before applying the razor. This removes dirt and oils and softens the facial hair, resulting in a more comfortable shave.

Pores can be stretched. When pores clog with a mixture of oil and dead skin cells, they expand as the clog grows. Washing with a granulated cleanser and warm water can remove blockages.

QUESTION Why did David Niven wear an Iron Cross throughout the war?

THE earlier answer, describing how Niven was ‘awarded’ an iron Cross by an American friend he met on the front lines in France, was a rare example of a war story featuring the actor.

Like many soldiers, he did not want to talk about the war. When pressed, he said: ‘i will tell you just one thing about the war, my first story and my last. i was asked by some American friends to search out the grave of their son near Bastogne.

‘i found it where they told me i would, but it was among 27,000 others, and i told myself that here, Niven, were 27,000 reasons why you should keep your mouth shut after the war.’
