BRITAIN’S gambling habits will be revolution­ised in the next two years. a Bill published last night sweeps away laws more than 400 years old. It introduces betting shops to England for the first time, making the cash bet legal at last.

SOVIET leader Mikhail Gorbachev tore into his feuding critics in front of millions of Russians yesterday in a televised speech to mark the 70th anniversar­y of the revolution.

He blasted both the Kremlin old guard intent on blocking his sweeping reforms and the young radicals who want him to move faster.

MONICA VITTI (1931-2022). The ‘Italian Garbo’ starred in Modesty Blaise (right) and l’avventura, which was booed by the audience at Cannes in 1960, but was awarded the festival’s Special Jury Prize. according to one obituary: ‘Her sharp, patrician features and icy demeanour provided a visual and stylistic counterpoi­nt to the working-class voluptuous­ness of the leading Italian actresses of the period.’ ADOLF (ADI) DASSLER (1900-78). The German entreprene­ur, with brother Rudolf, made the shoes U.S. athlete Jesse owens wore for his triumph at the 1936 olympics. But the duo fell out and set up rival companies on either side of the river that cut through their town. adi founded sportswear giant adidas while Rudolf set up rival Puma. There are many stories as to what started the feud, including a claim that Rudi had an affair with adi’s wife.
