Zelenska tells MPs: Britain never gave in ...nor will we

- By Kumail Jaffer Political Reporter

BRITAIN must ‘unite the world’ in bringing Russia to justice for its ‘ thousands of crimes’, Ukraine’s first lady told MPs and peers yesterday.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Olena Zelenska compared the bombardment of her country by Vladimir Putin’s forces to the Blitz on British cities in World War Two. In a powerful address, she said: ‘Ukrainians are now going through a terror which will resonate with you. Your island survived the air raids which were identical to those Russia uses now to put us on our knees.

‘We hear sirens every day identical to those heard by the British generations who did not surrender. We will not surrender, but victory is not the only thing we need. We need justice.’

Referring to the United Nations Declaration which united the Allies against Nazi Germany, she added: ‘Justice, like victory, is not possible without allies.

‘We need to unite the world community, just as it happened in January 19 2, to support the special tribunal against the aggression of Russia against Ukraine. I’m asking you a small favour to become the world leader in the justice efforts.’

Mrs Zelenska, in London to speak at an event raising awareness of violence against women and girls, accused Russian forces of ‘thousands’ of war crimes, including sexual violence.

She was given a standing ovation by those in the Parliamentary committee room, including Boris Johnson and Keir Starmer.

As the invasion entered its ninth month, Foreign Secretary James Cleverly accused Russia at a Nato meeting in Romania of trying to ‘freeze the Ukrainians into submission’ with strikes on its power plants.
