CHRIS SUTTON’S WALES RATINGS (4-2-3-1) SUBSTITUTES

-

DANNY WARD 3 DID well to deny Marcus Rashford early on. But awful attempts at saves in the second half, with England’s third goal slipping through his legs.

NECO WILLIAMS 5 AFTER two appearances as a left wing-back, he started at right back. But after getting his head in the way of Rashford’s rasping shot, he was replaced by Connor Roberts.

CHRIS MEPHAM 4 THANKFUL to see his goalkeeper come to the rescue when he could not stop Harry Kane’s pass from getting behind the back line. But Wales imploded in the second half.

JOE RODON 4 THE game plan was to defend deep and hope for a late winner. It did not work. Rodon was up against it as a result and given a troubling night by Rashford and Co.

BEN DAVIES 3 TASKED with taking care of Rashford but it was a losing battle. Lost the ball in the build-up to England’s second goal. Poor performance from Tottenham’s left back.

ETHAN AMPADU 5 NOT easy going up against a midfield of Henderson, Rice and Bellingham. Tried to protect his defence with Joe Allen but, as in the Iran game, Wales were overrun.

JOE ALLEN 5 THE so-called Welsh Xavi or Pembrokeshire Pirlo could not take the chance to show why he won such illustrious nicknames in the past. Sliced one shot well wide.

GARETH BALE 2 SAD to see what is likely to be his one and only World Cup end in such anonymity. I cannot remember him touching the ball! Replaced by Brennan Johnson after a knock.

AARON RAMSEY 4 ONE last chance to give us a glimpse of the talented footballer we know he is. Sadly does not have the legs he once did and could not influence the play enough here.

DAN JAMES 4 LOOKED lonely out on the left wing as England controlled the game from start to finish. Hard to be a ball carrier when your team do not have the ball.

KIEFFER MOORE 5

WALES’ lone striker. They did not play to his strengths at all or get runners around him. We cannot blame this defeat on Moore. He did his best.

Roberts 5 (for Williams, 35min); Johnson 5 (for Bale, 46); Morrell 5 (for Davies, 59); Wilson (for James, 77); Colwill (for Allen, 81).

MANAGER: ROB PAGE 2

‘YOU’RE going home in the morning,’ sang England’s supporters. Yes they are. Wales did not show any intent and never looked close to getting the result they needed to have a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages. The tactics were all wrong.

REFEREE: SLAVKO VINCIC (Slovenia) 6

THE stern official’s only other World Cup game was Argentina 1 Saudi Arabia 2. Never looked like he would be officiating another upset.
