Stalker booked register office... and invited his ex-professor to their ‘wedding’
A ‘DELUSIONAL’ graduate who developed an obsession with his former professor booked a register office and sent her an invitation to their imaginary wedding, a court heard.
In a three-year stalking campaign Tin Yeung repeatedly emailed maths lecturer Erengul Dodd – referring to himself as her ‘husband’ and ‘dear slave’.
Yeung, now 28, turned up at Professor Dodd’s office on several occasions and once arrived with a bag containing printed-out photos of her six-year-old son taken from her mother’s Facebook page.
The University of Southampton lecturer moved workplaces temporarily fearing Yeung would show up, magistrates heard. Yeung was given a restraining order and jailed for 18 weeks, suspended for 12 months.
Southampton Magistrates’ Court heard Yeung joined Professor Dodd’s lectures in September 2015, during his final year of study, and graduated in June 2016.
But Natalie Angel, prosecuting, said three years later Professor Dodd returned from a lunch break to find him outside her office – and his campaign of stalking began.
The court heard she would receive ‘ frequent’ emails from Yeung often of a ‘sexual nature’.
In June 2020, Yeung invited her to a marriage ceremony. The prosecutor told the court: ‘He booked a register office and sent her an email inviting her to their wedding.’
And in November 2022 Yeung arrived with a bag containing printed photos of her and her family – including pictures of her son, mother and sister, the court heard.
She described his advances as ‘delusional’ and in a victim impact read to the court, she said: ‘I have found his actions intimidating.’
Yeung pleaded guilty to stalking Professor Dodd between July 2019 and April last year.
He will have to pay a total of £239 in costs and complete a 12-month offender programme.
