Match Ratings
ZAK CRAWLEY 6
TRIED to set the tone in both innings by getting out of the blocks as quickly as possible, but he will have been irked by failing to go on when quite well set — twice.
BEN DUCKETT 6.5
A SIMILAR story to that of his opening partner, but Duckett showed that he will not allow Ravichandran Ashwin to get inside his head this time.
OLLIE POPE 9.5
PUT a twitchy start behind him by playing one of England’s finest ever innings overseas. Jawdropping stuff.
JOE ROOT 7
A GENUINE all-rounder in these Subcontinental conditions, made up for shortcomings with the bat
by providing control and wicket-taking threat with the ball.
JONNY BAIRSTOW 5.5
SHOWED a decisive way of playing, staying leg side of the ball, but unfortunately fell victim to a couple of beauties from India’s two left-armers.
BEN STOKES 9
CALMLY repaired what could have been a disastrous first innings with 70, and captained
superbly, backing his bowlers and topping things off with that stunning run out of Ravindran Jadeja.
BEN FOAKES 8
FULLY justified his recall with excellent glove work in the trickiest of conditions and his century stand with Pope turned the game on its head.
REHAN AHMED 6
HIS runs from No 8 were invaluable, and although
he struggled at times with the ball, he contributed two first-innings wickets and has two wins from two as a Test cricketer.
TOM HARTLEY 9.5
STARTED with an inverse Broad — being hit for six with his first delivery in Test cricket — but finished so strongly with the ball that he rivalled Pope for the man of the match award.
Oh, and he scored 57 priceless runs into the bargain too.
MARK WOOD 4
YOU can never question the Durham man’s effort levels, but he went wicketless while India’s strike weapon Jasprit Bumrah gave a masterclass on how to bowl on such a dead surface.
JACK LEACH 5.5
BATTLED through the pain barrier after sustaining knee injury early in the match, and contributed 10 overs to the astonishing fourth-day effort in the field.
