Failing the Tory faithful
In THE fullness of time, Dominic Lawson (Mail) may well be proved right that voting for Reform UK at the next election would help only the Labour Party.
But how, in the meantime, is he going to persuade millions of disaffected voters to overlook the fact that this so-called Conservative Government has allowed a tidal wave of wokeism to overwhelm us, utterly failed to control the Civil Service and presided over a massive deterioration in public services?
It has also encouraged unprecedented levels of immigration; dithered on replacing essential nuclear power generation; run down the armed Services alarmingly and failed to deter crime. Plus, we are being taxed as never before.
For the party faithful, it must be a real turn- off that at the top of Government we now have two men who were both soundly defeated in leadership contests, not to mention the unelected Foreign Secretary who, as PM, ratted on us when we voted to leave the EU.
The notion that, if re-elected with a slim majority, this discredited bunch of apparatchiks would deliver on their promises, when they have palpably failed to do so with an 80-seat majority, beggars belief.
Loyalty is a two-way street and I empathise with those who believe the Conservative Party has abandoned them, rather than the reverse. CHRISTOPHER GILL (Ludlow MP 1987-2001), Bridgnorth, Salop. What on earth are the Tories doing? They seem hell-bent on destroying themselves with all their backbiting and infighting. Flip-flop Starmer can’t believe his luck; they are doing it all for him. I hope Conservative MPs have got their CVs up to date.
