Should warnings of looming war be heeded?

-

A TOP NATO defence chief, Admiral Rob Bauer, has warned that the West could be at war with Russia within the next two decades. That means we need a new National Service Act. People must be trained, accommodation and equipment provided, instructors transferred and so much else. It won’t be a scrap of use waiting until towns and cities are bombed by powerful hardware before young men and women are handed their call-up papers. Vast sums of money would have to be allocated, and I’m afraid Little Johnny and many of his fellow citizens would be needed to fight.

JIM JACOBS (Korean War veteran), Fareham, Hants.

GENERAL Sir Patrick Sanders, the head of the Army, says that if war is likely, a call-up would be required. As tens of thousands of fit young men have landed here in recent years, they could be called up first.

ALAN HARVEY, Yarm, N. Yorks.

IF ADMIRAL Bauer is correct, should the UK not nationalise its steel industry to prepare for manufacturing military equipment?

TIM JAMES, Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan.

THIRTY years ago, I would have fought for my country. Now, I wouldn’t bother. Why fight for a population where so many people have outside loyalties?

R. MacDONALD, Sunderland.

HAVING spent 15 years in the Fleet Air Arm, I was interested to hear of a possible call-up, particularly if it is after May this year as I will then be 90. I hope they are still flying Sea Hawk aircraft.

BRIAN CHRISTLEY, Abergele, Conwy.

NOW the PM has categorically said there will be no conscription, when can we expect it to begin?

B. SMITH, Prestatyn, Denbighshire.
