Couple run down by ‘drunk’ teen after they told him not to drive

- By James Tozer

A TRAINEE doctor and his wife were mown down by a ‘drunk’ teenager after they told him he shouldn’t be behind the wheel.

A court was shown terrifying footage of a car being driven by Joshua Bunn, then 19, ploughing into Colin Winters and his wife Claire.

The couple had told Bunn he wasn’t fit to drive after they encountered him on a night out. He revved his car and mounted the kerb. Mrs Winters said she thought: ‘This is it. I am going to die; my daughter is going to wake up in the morning without her mummy and for what?’

‘Somewhat miraculously’, the hearing was told, she was ‘knocked through a small gap’ in the wall instead of being crushed against it before Bunn, now 22, sped off.

Remarkably, both victims escaped with just minor injuries, although Mrs Winters suffers flashbacks. After Bunn was jailed yesterday, she said: ‘I have all the signs of PTSD. I frequently hear the car engine and smell it revving.’

More than three years after the near-fatal drama, Bunn was locked up for four years and seven months after he pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm and dangerous driving. The ‘terrifying’ attack took place just after midnight on September 19, 2020, after the couple had been out for a meal in Oldham, Minshull Street Crown Court heard. As they returned to their car, they saw a ‘clearly intoxicated’ Bunn ‘staggering’ towards his vehicle.

Trainee doctor Mr Winters approached the teenager and told him he ‘ shouldn’t be drinking and driving’, only to be knocked off his feet as Bunn used his car as a weapon.

‘Thank God that gap was there, otherwise I genuinely think I would have been killed

that night,’ Mrs Winters told the court. ‘As the car reversed for the second time, I remember thinking: “I am going to die”.’

Bunn, of Royton, was arrested five days later. The court heard he had tried to cover his tracks by getting the car repaired. Recorder Nathan Moxon said the CCTV footage was ‘terrifying’, adding: ‘It is a miracle there were not more significant injuries.’
