Camilla’s verdict on Charles? He’s getting on and doing his best... thank goodness

- By Rebecca English Royal Editor

THE KING is ‘getting on’ and ‘doing his best’ following his prostate surgery, the Queen said yesterday.

Camilla, 76, was asked about her husband’s health as she officially opened a Maggie’s cancer support centre at the Royal Free Hospital in north-west London.

She was introduced to donors including Sir Gerald Ronson, who asked after the King’s health following his three-night hospital stay. ‘How’s the boss doing?’ he said. She replied: ‘He’s getting on, doing his best’ before adding: ‘Thank goodness!’

Camilla said she would pass the ‘very kind’ remarks on to her husband, who she had visited at least once a day in hospital.

Charles, 75, was discharged from The London Clinic on Monday after undergoing surgery for an enlarged prostate just over a week ago.

The King insisted his condition be confirmed publicly in order to encourage other men to seek medical help and advice should they have concerns.

Buckingham Palace said the King had been heartened to hear about the rise in enquiries to the NHS website, as well as support services and charities. He is likely to take up to a month to recuperate, cancelling his public engagements until further notice.

But he has continued working on his red boxes of official papers and may even undertake a few private audiences over the coming weeks.

Meanwhile his wife has a busy public schedule, yesterday formally opening the latest Maggie’s centre, a charity she has been president of since 200 .

Founded by Maggie Keswick Jencks, who died of breast cancer in 1995, the centres help patients with free professional support for anything from treatment side effects to money concerns. The new centre expects to receive more than 10,000 visits in its first year.
