Ex-minister’s extraordinary rant over cookie with a chocolate egg inside

- By Xantha Leatham Deputy Science Editor

FROM doctors’ strikes to A&E waiting times, there are many things that might grab the attention of a former health minister.

But Lord Bethell, who was at the Department of Health and Social Care during the Covid pandemic, has been getting rather exercised about the perhaps surprising subject of Cadbury Creme Eggs.

His intervention came after the Domino’s pizza chain joined forces with the confectionery giant to produce a Creme Egg encased in a chocolate chip cookie.

In an extraorindary outburst on X, formerly known as Twitter, the Tory peer wrote: ‘This is disgusting. A whole Cadbury Creme Egg inside a Domino’s cookie. These are serious corporate food companies. What are they thinking?

‘The executive team, the board and the shareholders should be ashamed of themselves. It’s not illegal. But it’s harmful. It’ll weigh heavily on their future career prospects. And it’s disgusting.’

He then went on to share photoand graphs of members of Domino’s board of directors, adding: ‘It blows in the face of their noble-sounding corporate responsibility commitments. They should know better. And use their talents to find less egregious ways to make a return.’

While the new concoction will come to around 370 calories – more than your average packet of crisps or chocolate bar – there are many readily-available high street drinks treats boasting much higher calorie counts. Meanwhile, Scotch eggs made using Creme Eggs have been around for nearly a decade, while deep-fried Mars bars are a well-known snack in Scotland.

Lord Bethell’s online followers were quick to point out he was ‘shouting at a cookie’ and that the sweet treat ‘looks amazing’.

His Conservative colleague Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg is a self-confessed devotee of Creme Eggs and once told the Commons that he had a ‘predilection’ for them.

The eggs – usually sold only between January 1 and Easter Sunday every year – were first produced by Fry’s in 1963 and were renamed Cadbury Creme Eggs in 1971.

A spokesman for Domino’s said yesterday that the ‘special edition’ cookies, which will be available from Monday, bring together two ‘much loved, iconic brands and are designed to be a delicious pre-Easter treat which can be shared’.

The spokesman added: ‘ At just over 370 calories per cookie, they are in line with the content of many other treats available on the high street, such as frappes and croissants.

‘We know our customers love to share our existing cookies, and we expect they will do the same with the new Creme Egg cookies.’

‘They should be ashamed’
