She’s a martyr, says family of Gaza girl, 6, who begged: Save me

- By Jon Brady

A GIRL of six whose haunting last words were ‘come and get me, the tank is very close’ has been found killed in Gaza.

Hind Rajab had phoned rescue workers pleading for help after her family’s car came under fire in Gaza City. She was fleeing the city with her aunt, uncle and three cousins at the time amid Israel’s war with Hamas.

Surrounded by the corpses of her relatives outside a petrol station in Tel al-Hawa, Hind phoned the Palestine Red Crescent Society and begged them to come and rescue her.

In a heartbreaking phone call, she had explained that her family were killed by gunfire, saying: ‘I’m telling you they’re dead.’

She added: ‘The tank is next to me... it’s coming towards me... it’s very, very close.’

Her pleas ended when the phone line was cut amid the sound of more gun shots.

After two weeks of trying to track her down, paramedics found the black Kia that Hind had been travelling in.

Her body was recovered on Saturday alongside those of her family and two paramedics who tried to save her. Her grandfather, Baha Hamada, said: ‘Hind and everyone else in the car is martyred. She was frightened, terrified... Hind is my first grandchild, she’s a piece of my heart.’

The Hamas-backed health ministry has blamed Israeli forces for the tragedy, with Hamas urging the international community to condemn a ‘horrific crime’.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society claims Israel ‘deliberately targeted’ one of its ambulances as it arrived at the scene.

There was no comment from the Israel Defence Forces.
