Drama at the death as Ipswich edge out Millers

-

IPSWICH somehow avoided a shock slip-up at home to rock-bottom ROTHERHAM last night as Kieran McKenna’s side overcame a stoppage-time equaliser to win 4-3 with seconds to spare.

The millers, without an away win since November 2022, took the lead after just 80 seconds through Tom eaves. But Ipswich were level in the ninth minute when Burns headed home Sam morsy’s cross. McKenna’s hosts went ahead five minutes later when Kieffer moore swept home a cross from Burns, before Burns stabbed in a third.

Rotherham were back in it on the hourmark when hakeem Odoffin thumped a poor punch by Vaclav hladky back past the goalkeeper from 12 yards and level at 3-3 when Cafu scored an audacious panenka penalty in stoppage time afer Kayden Jackson had brought down Peter Kioso. But Chelsea loanee Omari hutchinson, on as a substitute, smashed home a dramatic winner in the 95th minute to keep Ipswich firmly in the automatic promotion mix. SOUTHAMPTON suffered a major blow in their hunt for automatic promotion as they were edged out by in-form HULL at St mary’s. Anass Zaroury and Fabio Carvalho profited from some poor defending by the home side to take three points back to Yorkshire. Joe Aribo fired in for Saints in the 88th minute but it was too little, too late.

Southampton were looking to win their 10th home league game in a row for the first time since 2011 but were far from their best against Liam Rosenior’s welldrilled side. They now lie fourth, behind Ipswich and Leeds in the table. hull, however, are on the up — having now won five of their last six in the league — and have climbed into the last play-off place as they too set their sights on promotion. and WEST BROM kept the feelgood factor instilled by their recent takeover alive, winning 3-0 at PLYMOUTH thanks to Cedric Kipre’s opener, a stunner by mikey Johnston and a third from Tom Fellows in stoppage time.
