2 years on, Sunak’s Ukraine vow

- By Claire Ellicott and Kumail Jaffer

RISHI Sunak has vowed to stand by Ukraine ‘until they prevail’ as he marked the second anniversary of the war.

The Prime Minister declared that ‘tyranny will never triumph’ as he said Britain will do ‘whatever it takes, for as long as it takes’ to help them win.

Today marks two years since Russia invaded Ukraine and began a bloody conflict which has seen losses on both sides.

Mr Sunak said: ‘When Putin launched his illegal invasion... the free world was united in its response.

‘We stood together behind Ukraine. And on this grim anniversary, we must renew our determination.

‘This is the moment to show that tyranny will never triumph and to say once again that we will stand with Ukraine today and tomorrow. We are prepared to do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, until they prevail.’ Mr Sunak, who visited Kyiv last month to sign a new security agreement and announce military funding, said that the UK was ‘going further’ in its support.

His poignant words came as Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron addressed the UN in support of Ukraine, branding Putin a ‘neo-imperialist bully who believes that might is right’. In an appeal to the international community to continue to support Ukraine, he said: ‘Two years on I recognise some want to rethink. There is a sense of fatigue there are other problems, a compromise might seem attractive. But this is wrong,’ he said.

‘If we allow this brutal dictator in Europe to redraw our boundaries by force, to invade other countries and get away with it, no country will be safe.

‘If we allow Putin to eke out some sort of victory here, they won’t just be cheering in Moscow, they’ll be cheering in Beijing as well.’

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said that Britain would always support Ukraine no matter who was in power and said Mr Putin’s ‘cowardice and barbarity’ will not prevail. He said: ‘The UK and our allies will stand in solidarity with them.’
