Hunt for gunman after 3 injured in Clapham shooting

- By Sam Lawley and Arthur Parashar

POLICE were hunting for a gunman and an accomplice last night after three people were injured in a shooting in south London.

The Met said a firearm, believed to be a shotgun, was fired from a moped that they had been chasing near Clapham Common before the attackers fled the scene.

Two people, believed to be women, sustained shotgun pellet injuries in the terrifying attack, which took place at the Belle Vue pub at 5pm. A third person was injured by the moped.

The bike and weapon were abandoned on the pavement and forensics were working in and around

‘Shot through the pub window’

the pub yesterday evening.

Henry Smith, who was in the Belle Vue with friends at the time of the attack, said two women were left bleeding after being shot inside.

He told the Mail: ‘There was a really loud bang and broken glass. There were two people who ran past the window having crashed their moped.

‘They shot a shotgun through the window. I’m not sure if they were aiming for someone. Two women got shot in the pub. One was shot on the side of the head or got hit by shotgun shrapnel.’

Mr Smith said the moped was being ‘chased by police’ and that ‘part of the shotgun was in the road and part of it was in the pavement’ after the attack.

Douglas De Souza, 48, who owns Headquarterz hairdressers on Clapham High Street, said: ‘They were being chased by the police and dropped the bike and ran.

‘The police were chasing them and they came up behind them and I just heard the shots.’ He added: ‘They ran away down Clapham Park Road. We are within the cordon – we haven’t left the shop yet. We are waiting for police and they are outside taking pictures of the evidence.’

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said ambulances, paramedics and London’s air ambulance attended the incident.

‘We treated three people at the scene and took two to a London major trauma centre and one to hospital,’ the spokesman added.
