Girl, 10, found dead at home had been in care

- By Andy Dolan and Claire Duffin

A GIRL of ten was found dead a week after returning from care to live with her mother, neighbours said last night.

Shay Kang had been seen playing with other children in the cul- de- sac in Rowley Regis, West Midlands, on Sunday evening. But officers were called to the house after teachers raised the alarm that she had not turned up for school on Monday morning, neighbours claimed.

Resident Jordan Trueman, 24, said: ‘The school welfare teachers came round at lunchtime.

‘They looked through the letter box and were shouting, “Hello, hello”. They must have called the police because the cops turned up soon after.’

Neighbour Lorna Perry, 32, said: ‘Our neighbour said Shay had been in care. She only went back to her mum last week apparently. It’s so tragic.’ West Midlands Police arrested a 33-year-old woman – believed to be known to the child – on suspicion of murder. She remained in custody last night.

A woman whose child went to Brickhouse Primary School with Shay added: ‘She wasn’t your typical girly girl. She was quiet and loved going to school, where she seemed to be doing well.’

Another woman, Taylor Blake, who has set up an online fundraising page, said: ‘ Shay’s mother told me that they didn’t have any other family.

‘We hope the fundraising page can at least give Shay a good send-off now, like she deserves.’

The school said: ‘Our school is deeply saddened by the tragic death of one of our children.

‘Shay was a bright, happy, funloving child who was well liked by all, and she will be very sadly missed by everyone.’

Detective Inspector Dan Jarratt said: ‘A young girl has tragically lost her life and our thoughts are with her loved ones and all those imp acted by this terrible passing. We are working hard to establish what happened and our investigation has made good progress.’
