Tasty! How a full English breakfast can make a man more attractive
IT IS news that will be cheered in every greasy spoon around the country.
For tucking into a full English breakfast makes men more attractive to the opposite sex, a study suggests.
And while many women may feel daintier tucking into a pastry, eating carb-rich croissants and muffins can make them less attractive to men.
Scientists found that the first meal of the day impacts sex hormones in the body, affecting how attractive a person appears. The study measured the facial attractiveness of participants two hours after eating different types of breakfast.
Some were given a highglycaemic breakfast – one with refined carbs known to boost blood sugar levels – while others had a low-glycaemic breakfast.
A fatty, protein-rich fry-up of bacon, sausages and eggs was found to boost the attractiveness of men and to a lesser extent, women. By contrast, women were rated as less attractive if they enjoyed something containing refined carbohydrates, like pastries.
It is thought this is because high blood sugar levels, known as hyperglycaemia, have an ageing effect on the skin and suppress sex hormones.
Hyperglycaemia can happen in both sexes, but it was only found to lower attractiveness in women. Men were even considered more attractive when they consumed sugary or starchy foods in the afternoon.
However, for those who might be tempted to embark on a diet of fry-ups, the researchers at the University of Montpellier in France did stress that obesity in men often leads to lowered testosterone levels, while in women it can cause an excess of ‘male’ hormones.
