BAD MOTHERS, ACORN TV

JEALOUSY, betrayal and murder are at the core of this easy-to-watch Australian eight-parter about the dramatic lives of five suburban mothers. The most familiar of the quintet is a high heels-sporting Melissa George (Home And Away, Hunted) as Charlotte (pictured centre with Tess Haubrich, Jessica Tovey, Mandy McElhinney and Shalom Brune-Franklin), who we’re set up to hate in the first episode. She seems every inch the scarlet woman, right down to her outfits. But is that actually the case?

GREAT DETECTIVE Hands Of A Murderer, UKTV Play

EDWARD WOODWARD steps into the greatcoat of Sherlock Holmes in a 1990 film that won’t blow you away with an intricate plot or enchanting mystery but is worth Essentially, if you enjoy a bit of gossip, this series is the TV equivalent. It doesn’t have the depth of HBO’s Big Little Lies but it does have all the bad behaviour, nice houses and relatively low level of attention required a look to see how The Equalizer handles playing Conan Doyle’s great detective. His Watson is played by John Hillerman (pictured with Woodward), aka Magnum P.I.’s original Higgins. The cast is a roll call of some of TV’s biggest 1980s stars, and that to follow its twists and turns — not least of which are George’s frequent wardrobe changes. And there’s a dramatic truth in there about the consequences of devoting too much of your life to parenting, too.

might be enough to make up for a plot that is spun out of a rather simple game of cat and mouse, as Holmes and Watson pursue Moriarty (Anthony Andrews), who has escaped the gallows with government secrets stolen from Holmes’s brother Mycroft.
