Is being in an all-male club shameful?

-

CABINET Secretary Simon Case and intelligence chief Sir Richard Moore have resigned as members of the all-male Garrick Club after The Guardian revealed their membership. I wonder how many notable ladies would resign from the all-female W.I. if The Guardian ‘outed’ them.

Trevor vas, Walsall, W. mids.

MAYBE the pressure to diversify would be less if the club changed its name to ‘the Men’s Institute’.

John Hodge, address supplied.

SIMON CASE says he wanted to reform the Garrick Club from within. Why doesn’t he just concentrate on the job he is paid to do and reform the Civil Service? What a wimp.

P. Jeffery, newcastle upon Tyne.

Will the BBC’s Clive Myrie be resigning from the Garrick Club?

Kay Young, London Se24.

WHAT is wrong with men-only and women-only members’ clubs? Mr Case’s excuse that he had infiltrated the club in order to reverse the rule on women members was risible.

Jenny Palmer, southampton.

MUCH fuss is made of the fact that the Garrick does not admit women. will men be allowed to join the University women’s Club in Central London, which was founded in 1883 because none of the popular gentlemen’s clubs at the time accepted women as members?

PATRICK Burke, london eC2.

AS A woman, I have absolutely no problem with all-male clubs. Their members are committing no crime and should not cave in to pressure from The Guardian or any other muck-stirring body.

M. Sims, Warrington, Cheshire.

I WOULD imagine it will be drinks all round at the Garrick after the resignations of Moore and Case.

P. Chapman, Barnsley, s. yorks.

I’D LOVE to join the Garrick Club just to annoy its critics but I’m lower class and know my place.

Tony Ball, High Wycombe, Bucks.
