THE new millennium will be ushered in with a round-the-clock drinking binge it is feared, as pubs and clubs stay open for an unpreceden­ted 36 hours. Bars will be allowed to serve alcohol from 11am on New Year’s Eve until 11pm the following day, ministers announced yesterday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

SETH ROGEN, 42. The Canadian actor and comedian, who started doing stand-up at 13, starred in Steve Jobs, knocked Up and The Fabelmans. Rogen enjoys making pottery and sharing his work online. He said: ‘I’ve spent years working on movies that fewer people pay attention to than a vase I spent 40 minutes on.’

SAM WALEY-COHEN, 42, in 2022, became the first amateur jockey to win the grand National in 32 years — before announcing his retirement a few minutes later. He runs a £300 million dentistry business he founded.

DODI FAYED (1955-1997). The son of Harrods owner Mohamed Al-Fayed died in the Paris car crash that killed his lover Princess Diana. Vanity Fair magazine described him as ‘a 42-year-old man/child with a lavish monthly allowance’. At 15, his father reportedly gave him his own Park Lane apartment, a bodyguard and a chauffeure­d Rolls-Royce.

BENJAMIN ZEPHANIAH (1958-2023). The dyslexic poet and novelist from Birmingham left school aged 13 unable to read or write. He went on to become professor of poetry and creative writing at Brunel University.
