Dodgy stamps and Chinese whispers

-

THIEVES are thieves, whether in the UK, China or any other country. For supposed experts to call the production of fake British stamps ‘economic warfare’ by the Chinese Communist Party is ridiculous. i would imagine the CCP has more pressing things to do than supervise such subterfuge.

There are two groups of criminals here: the producers, and shop owners in the UK who buy their stamps. Why the West keeps demonising China, besides jealousy, is beyond me.

ANTHONY MATHEWS, Ruckinge, Kent.

WE WERE sorry to read about Mr Murray’s experience (Mail) after he says he purchased a stamp from a Post Office branch. Post Offices receive stamps direct from Royal Mail’s secure printers. We require an itemised receipt in order to investigate. Fake stamps are a scourge on our postal services and the Postal Affairs Minister has said Royal Mail must do everything possible to prevent them from entering circulation.

NEILL O’SULLIVAN, Post Office Managing Director, Parcels

& Mails, London EC2.

HOW can anyone prove the stamp they purchased and posted was genuine? They no longer have possession of it and the recipient has no idea where it was purchased. Charging recipients £5 is a nice little earner for Royal Mail. shame on them for treating people like this.

Mrs v. BARNES, Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.

ECONOMIC warfare by China? Nonsense. Nearly every item in our shops is made in China; and Western companies sink billions into the country because Chinese workforces will graft all week for a handful of rice. if the Chinese are ‘monitoring us all’ they must enjoy being bored stiff.

JAMES ADAMS, Retford, Notts.

HAVE I understood this correctly? Before barcodes there were a hundred times as many fake stamps in circulation but the cost of this fraud was written off. Now, with barcodes, every fake stamp is detected but the customer has to cover the cost. is it not possible that the ‘fake’ stamps are genuine but there is some technical issue with them being identified as such? That possibility needs investigating before shopkeepers are blamed.

CLIVE MOTT, New Milton, Hants.
