Will Sir Keir honour his defence pledge?

- MiCk Warren, Poole, dorset.

SIR KEIR STARMER’S exclusive article on the importance of maintaining the UK’s defence capabilities (Mail) was proactive and persuasive.

I agree with him that the parlous state of our Armed Forces and their equipment is disgraceful; and that our current Government has been remiss on this vital issue. No one wants a perilous, febrile world but that is what we have. The Government should heed this wake-up call and realise that the public demand we get up to speed with defence spending.

SO KEIR STARMER guarantees the new Dreadnought nuclear submarines will be built. The problem is, i don’t believe a word that Labour says. i note he made no commitment to new frigates or destroyers, to the new Tempest fighter aircraft or to new equipment for the Army. All of these are badly needed, now. had he made a firm commitment to spending 3 per cent of Britain’s GDP on defence, i might have believed him.

RICHARD GUNN, Whickham, Tyne and Wear.

THE nuclear deterrent is safe in Sir Keir’s hands, he says. But with Labour’s expected majority after the election, there will probably be 40 or more Corbynistas and supporters of Momentum behind him, so I think he’ll have a battle to keep it.

M. COHEN, Huntingdon, Cambs.

HOW many times will Sir Keir change his mind? I wouldn’t put him in charge of a pop gun.

JOHN LOWARCH, Oswestry, Salop.

IT FEELS like only the other day when Sir Keir Starmer was in full support of former Labour leader ‘ban the nukes’ Jeremy Corbyn. Flip-flopper Sir Keir will say anything to get into power. Who knows what will happen if and when he does.
