Keep on moving, and you CAN have your cake and eat it
Dr Michael Mosley (Mail) wrote that ‘the dangers of cholesterol have been seriously exaggerated’.
I’m 64 years old, and for years I’ve had the same eating habits. I love healthy food like fruit and veg, but I also eat a big fry-up at least two or three times a week; I often have fish and chips, bread and butter, etc; I love a packet of crisps and a bar of chocolate every evening; and I’m a regular at McDonald’s and Greggs, where I’ll scoff burgers and pizzas.
But despite this so-called ‘bad diet’, I’m happy to report that I’m fit as a fiddle for my age and I hardly ever visit a GP. I climb mountains (snowdon and
Ben nevis among them), I walk everywhere rather than take the car, and cycle long distances. I’m still working 30 hours a week and I do heavy gardening for my elderly neighbours.
Most health professionals seem to over-analyse what we eat. I believe that if you keep yourself active and on the move, you can eat more or less whatever you want and still feel healthy.
I’m not as slim (5ft 6in and 12st) as I was 30 years ago, but I feel as strong as a horse and I regularly overtake young folk up steep climbs while I’m on my long treks in the Peak District and in the Highlands of scotland.
Keep physically active, stay strong, push yourself beyond imaginary limits and you can then enjoy food without thinking too much about it. It might not be for everyone, but it works for me.
