How my boozy marriage to Vogue spun out of control, by Spencer

- Showbusiness Reporter By Dolly Busby

SPENCER Matthews has revealed that he and wife Vogue Williams had a ‘ boozy relationship’ before his drinking problem got so severe he was forced to go sober overnight.

The Made In Chelsea star met Ms Williams, 38, on the 2017 reality show The Jump, while struggling with his addiction, and admitted it was alcohol that brought them together.

It wasn’t until she became pregnant with their first child Theodore, now five, that she stopped ‘binge-drinking’ which, in turn, emphasised how much alcohol her husband was consuming.

Speaking on The Mail’s Everything I Know About Me podcast, the 35-yearold admitted: ‘I’m sure Vogue wouldn’t mind me saying, she’s a bit of a binge

‘I knew I’d lose her if I carried on’

drinker. She actually hates alcohol, she can’t stand being hungover. She doesn’t like the taste of booze, she’ll drink to get drunk.

‘But when she stopped, I carried on. It was every day and there was a general level of disappointment in her about me. I knew I would lose Vogue if I carried on drinking the way I was drinking.’

After winning The Jump, Spencer struggled to find more television work while Vogue’s career flourished.

The reality star said: ‘I was beginning to feel like a real loser. She would do these great things and travel while she was pregnant, and land these TV jobs and present these documentaries.

‘I’d be at home like, “Just won the Jump, wonder what’s next”.

‘And in reality, nothing is really next, there’s always somebody younger and better. I was not in a position to go out and get anything. I was just p*****’.

During this time he was drinking five beers and up to half a bottle of whisky and falling asleep while still intoxicated alone in bed.

The turning point came in 2018 when he drank most of a bottle of whisky in one night at the London home he shared with Vogue.

The now father- of-three went sober overnight and founded his low-alcohol drinks brand The Clean Liquor Company in 2019, but he said initially no one close to him believed he could do it.

But it was his older brother James, 48, who is married to the Princess of Wales’s sister Pippa Middleton, who was the hardest to convince of Spencer’s newfound sobriety. He said: ‘I’d lived with my brother in the dark boozy times.

‘He was the last to topple over because he was just expecting nothing from me.

‘But my relationship with my mum and dad became much better and my father began to trust me with all kinds of stuff and let me in on the family business.’

A self-made multi-millionaire, David Matthews founded the five- star Eden Rock Caribbean hotel in St Barts which has welcomed the likes of Sir Elton John and Beyonce since he bought the land in 1995.
