When Childline first launched more than 30 years ago, all contact was over the phone, with many of the calls being made from telephone boxes. But the ways that children and young people access the service today are dramatically different.
Almost three-quarters of counselling sessions are now delivered online via email and web chat and last year 1.8 million sessions on the Childline website were conducted via mobile devices.
In response, Childline has launched a new iphone app which it claims is the first to provide counselling to young people directly through their mobile phones.
The app, called For Me, allows users to chat one on one with a counsellor, to access the “Ask Sam” problem pages and to use a personal area called Private Locker to track their mood and write down their thoughts. For Me has no obvious Childline branding on the logo, so young people don’t need to worry about friends spotting it on their phones.
