TOP CATS HOLD ONTO CAMOGIE LEAGUE CROWN

- BY DARAGH Ó CONCHÚIR

KILKENNY retained their Littlewoods Ireland Camogie League Division 1 title with an all-round team performance that augurs well for the Championship. Just as in the All-ireland final last September, Cork were unable to work Kilkenny out. The Rebelettes did improve in the second half, the introduction of Orla Cotter a welcome boost but Catherine’s Foley’s sensational block on Amy Connor’s shot meant there would be no way back for Cork. Kilkenny often played with just one player inside their opposition 45 but hit a goal by the third minute, when Denise Gaule advanced on a delivery by Miriam Walsh and hand-passed over the advancing Aoife Murray. Katie Power and Walsh were flying and such were the Rebels’ defensive difficulties that Paudie Murray substituted three-time All Star Pamela Mackey after just 20 minutes. Kilkenny were full value for their 1-6 to 0-4 lead at half time and Walsh’s goal in the 41st minute was decisive.
