Blunder gives hope on Big C
A LABORATORY error led scientists to realise a drug for high blood pressure could prevent skin cancer. A former graduate researching whether carvedilol raised the risk of tumours inadvertently tested it for its cancerfighting properties instead. The results showed it could stop sun-damaged cells turning cancerous. The Western University of Health Sciences in the US said: “Our research could lead to a class of new cancer-preventive agents.”
