35 YEARS AGO (1982)
Royal Marines re-took South Georgia in The Falkland Islands without casualties after a two-hour assault on the outnumbered Argentine garrison. It marked a turning point in conflict, paving the way for the main campaign.
14 YEARS AGO (2003)
Winnie Madikizela-mandela, the ex-wife of former South African President Nelson Mandela, was sentenced to four years in prison following her conviction for fraud and theft. In 2004, an appeal judge overturned the conviction for theft and gave her a three-and-a-half-year suspended sentence.
