LIMAVADY SECONDS AWAY TO TITLE LIFT

-

LIMAVADY United can be crowned champions tonight. But they will have to do it the hard way with a trip to Newry their challenge. Win and they’re up, lose and it goes to the last day of the season with Limavady at home to Donegal Celtic and Newry at Moyola. A win for Darren Mullen’s side this evening would have them sitting just a point behind going into that final round of fixtures. For DC, only two wins, two Newry losses and a goal difference swing of 18 would get them a play-off place now. For them, the realistic target will be to secure a top-three finish with Moyola breathing down their necks, just a point behind. At the weekend, Limavady had to come from behind before departing Banbridge with maximum points. Acheson’s header had Town in front 10 minutes in but by midway through the half, Paul Owens had restored parity. And that’s how it remained until 16 minutes from time when Joe Mccready stepped forward to net the winner. And that was the same scoreline at Tobermore where Newry also showed their promotion mettle. They were two goals to the good thanks to Jimmy Walker’s penalty and a John Boyle strike. Nicky Hudson got one back for Tobermore but despite their best efforts they couldn’t get a second. Donegal Celtic’s play-off hopes were all but ended with a 2-2 home draw against Moyola Park. The visitors had been two goals to the good through Jason Paul’s brace but DC rescued a point to maintain their unbeaten record with late goals from Monaghan and Rossborough. At the other end, Lisburn Distillery secured their safety – and plunged Bangor into serious peril. Two first-half goals from Young had the Whites sitting pretty only for Baxter’s penalty to get Bangor back in it. But a spot kick of their own, converted by Mccaw, wrapped up the oh-so precious win for Distillery. Also completing the great escape were Newington who made it back-to-back wins with a 3-0 victory over Queen’s. Gary Rafferty hit two of the goals either side of half-time with Scully putting the gloss on the win.
