Our front page told how flamboyant Brian Clough resigned as Nottingham Forest manager after 18 years. He gave reporters outside his home a taste of his managerial style, telling one: “Keep off my grass, young man!”

25 YEARS AGO (1992)

Labour MP Betty Boothroyd became the first woman Speaker in the Commons and the first member of the Opposition to hold the post since the Second World War. She retired in 2000 and, now aged 87, sits in the Lords.

72 YEARS AGO (1945)

American and Russian forces linked up at the River Elbe in Germany, effectivel­y splitting the German army in two. Their respective military leaders paid tribute to the troops and in Moscow 324 guns fired a massive salvo. The Allies were one step closer to victory.
