Rodgers: Every Old Firm game is special

- BY MICHAEL GANNON

BRENDAN RODGERS insists the Old Firm will never lose its six appeal – even after half a dozen derby clashes. The Parkhead boss is out to seal an unbeaten season against his club’s fierce foes at Ibrox today after four wins and a draw in his first campaign in charge. The Hoops have already wrapped up the title and seen off the Light Blues in the League and Scottish Cups but their manager insisted there is no chance of getting fed up squaring up to his rivals. He said: “I don’t think it is ideal playing so many times but it is the nature of it. You are going to play four times in the league and then we have two semi-finals, but it doesn’t take anything off them. “I will turn up at Ibrox at the weekend and there is going to be a real buzz to play the games and we will look forward to it. It is a great pitch and the supporters behind the goal will be happy and we want to perform for them. “You’ve an obligation to fight, to run, to do your best. “We are in a really good moment physically in the team and our confidence is there. It is all working towards improvement.” There might not be anything riding on today’s showdown in terms of silverware but when asked if he treated the Old Firm encounters any differently, Rodgers was clear. He said: “No. I would like to think the players will tell you that. Every game I approach, it might be my last game. “I have to fight to prove that I am good enough to be here. “That means from the first waking moment we focus on our job, I make the players better, develop them and help the team develop. “They have been ready to fight. There are no lazy days, we’ve never had a lazy day in training. You can’t afford it in the games. “Like I’ve said, our season will not finish, and the demands will not finish, until the last whistle goes against Aberdeen in the Cup Final.” Meanwhile, Hoops midfielder Stuart Armstrong has revealed how glad he is to be going into the Ibrox cauldron alongside Celtic’s ‘true leader’ on the pitch. During the week, skipper Scott Brown (inset) had a recent red card downgraded to a yellow during the week, and Armstrong welcomed that verdict with open arms. He said: “Scott is a unique player in the sense he epitomises Celtic in many ways. “It’s a lot nicer to have him in the team than out of it. “We have a very good depth of squad here and everyone will want to play their part. “With Scott, though, his performances and effort throughout the games have shown he’s a true leader. “He’s respected very much. He’s a terrific player”
