A MAN was killed in a freak accident yesterday after a lorry carrying logs shed its load where he was walking. The tragic pedestrian, whose name has not yet been released, passed away after the road crash in Co Down at around 10.30am. Details of the incident are unclear but there were reports the man may have been struck by some of the bags of logs. However the PSNI confirmed a “male pedestrian died as a result of the crash on the Rostrevor Road in Warrenpoint”. Police sealed off the scene for a time and a van was seen on the road with a large number of bags of logs strewn across the route. South Down MLA Sinead Bradley said residents in Warrenpoint were shocked by the death. She added: “People are coming to terms with the fact that a life has been pulled from us in such a sudden and dramatic way. “The beauty of the area along the Shore Road from Warrenpoint to Rostrevor attracts an endless stream of walkers all year around but particularly during spells of good weather. “Amidst the pleasant surroundings on a beautiful sunny day none of us anticipate circumstances unfolding in a way that would result in the tragic loss of life. “I extend my heartfelt sympathies to the family and loved ones of the deceased. May he rest in peace. “Tribute must be paid to the local fire and rescue team who swiftly arrived at the scene, to the Ambulance Service and the PSNI who stepped in to bring dignity and order under such difficult circumstances. “As always we are indebted to these individuals.”
